New Energy Storage Technology Could Seriously Impact Costs

New Energy Storage Technology Could Seriously Impact Costs

Innovation September 24, 2017

A new research study by a team of University of California and TU Munich scientists suggest that prices for lithium-ion battery storage could go down dramatically. The goal, to get costs down to $100/kWh by 2019, would be a substantial decrease from the 1990’s when cost per kWH was $10,000.

The article in PV Magazine goes on to say that if the research study is confirmed, that would indicate that prices for battery storage systems are falling faster than PV and wind technologies. Additionally, the new combination of solar, wind and storage together could soon outcompete coal and natural gas plants on cost alone. Researchers suggest, that the biggest hurdle to get to $100/kWh by 2019 is a recent lack of investment for basic and applied research and concluded that R & D spending and innovation is critical for this reduction in cost.
