New Renewable Energy Storage Using Salt?
Alphabet’s research lab X is developing a system that can be located anywhere. The prototype uses salt and antifreeze and has the potential to out-live lithium-ion batteries and could compete in price with new hydroelectric plants and other energy storage methods. The project, codenamed “Malta” isn’t an official project, yet, reports Bloomberg. Previously, scientists have proven that this particular energy storage technique is plausible. If successful, “Malta” could open up trillions of dollars in market opportunity.
"If the moonshot factory gives up on a big, important problem like climate change, then maybe it will never get solved," Obi Felten, a director at X told Bloomberg. "If we do start solving it, there are trillions and trillions of dollars in market opportunity."
